JPP placement students launch thematic syllabus on women's criminalization and incarceration
Today, uOttawa Criminology undergraduate field placement students Sara Fleet, Nina Jährig and Roberta Mara launched “Reflections by Women on their Criminalization and Incarceration: A Journal of Prisoners on Prisons Thematic Syllabus”. This research, teaching, and advocacy resource includes articles authored and co-authored by currently and formerly incarcerated women published in the JPP that address various themes, including: Indigenous struggles; experiencing racism; discrimination and differential treatment in a gendered society; political imprisonment; trauma enduring prior to, during and after prison; inadequate health care; mental health, segregation and self-harm; pregnancy, motherhood and family behind bars; prison education; surviving imprisonment; stigma and societal rejection; and the need for change behind and beyond prison walls. Under the supervision of Justin Piché (Associate Professor, Criminology, uOttawa), Fleet, Jährig and Mara also digitized the entire back issue catalogue of the journal this semester, which is available via its open access platform. The goal of these and other initiatives placement students have worked on has been to expand the accessibility of knowledge produced by incarcerated writers that have made contributions to the JPP since its founding in 1988.
