Abstract

This essay analyzes satirical cartoons published during the Spanish Transition by OPS, alias of Andrés Rábago, known today as El Roto. The intellectual practice these drawings present, their depth and their interpretive capacity, make them an optimal tool to study the culture of their time. I propose that the lack of words isolates these cartoons, reinforcing their invitation to reflection. Their violence makes visible the subjective violence of the Francoist regime, and their dystopia universalizes them, highlighting their message. Thus, I explore new ways of reflecting on dissident narratives of the Spanish Transition through the work of an artist who documents the latent trauma behind official discourse.
