Abstract

The assassination of six Jesuit priests in San Salvador, El Salvador, a landmark event for the recent history of that country, is the main topic of the novel Noviembre (2015), by the Salvadoran Jorge Galán. This novel can be considered an example of testimonial literature, a very important genre in Central America, especially during the 70s and 80s. Galán’s novel, however, subverts the form and final objective conventions of this genre. This essay analyzes the novel’s form and purpose, aspects that enrich the possibilities for the study of testimonial literature. Noviembre combines nonfiction and non-fiction strategies in order to become an example of what Jablonka calls “writing about the real.”
