Abstract

This article analyzes a process of ruralizing the Latin American literary genre known as “lo neopolicíaco” as it appears in the novel Abril rojo (2006) by Peruvian author Santiago Roncagliolo. This analysis aims to demonstrate the strategies the novel employs in distancing itself from urban areas and using the Andes-city Peruvian paradigm as a way of mixing the “neopolicíaco” model with its representation of the aftermath of the political violence in Perú during the year 2000. Finally, the article claims this ruralization process serves as entertainment for a global audience but also as a deeper critique of power relations in modern Peru.
