Abstract

The graphic novel Regreso al Edén (2020) originates from a conversation Paco Roca, Spanish comic book author, has with his mother Antonia about a treasured old photograph, the only one that she has with her own mother. The link between photography, comics and memory materializes in aesthetic-formal solutions that show the relationship between the unique, instantaneous and private nature of that family photograph and the reproduced, expanded, and public aspect of the novel. The lost Eden that the snapshot evokes in Antonia is revealed in the comic/album as an imagined construction of resistance, while Roca’s investigation into that which exceeds the limits of the picture pedagogically uncovers the painful collective reality of living during the post-Spanish Civil War period.
