Abstract

Condorito, by René Ríos Boettiger (Pepo), and Mafalda, by Joaquín Lavado
(Quino), are two of the most widely recognized comics in the world. Doreen
Massey uses the concept of sense of place to refer to the network of social,
economic, and political relationships that operate in a particular space and
define gender roles. This article analyzes how various graphic strategies are
used in Mafalda and Condorito to emphasize or contest men’s and women’s
gender roles and sense of place in private and public spaces within Latin
American societies.
