La repetición y sus diversos tipos en la General estoria de Alfonso X el Sabio

Abstract

This article analyzes repetition as a method of historiographical inquiry in Alfonso X the Wise’s General estoria. It examines how repeated narratives, sources, moral judgments, and narrative frameworks contribute to the construction, transmission, and reinterpretation of historical discourse. These forms of repetition reveal the mechanisms by which universal history is rewritten, organized, and consolidated through structures that give coherence to the past. The recurrence of sources and moral interpretations demonstrates the persistence of interpretive traditions, while repeated narrative schemes reinforce and expand historical versions. Overall, repetition functions as a structural, didactic, and theological device, enabling the work to integrate diverse materials and to shape a macro-narrative of historical and moral memory. The study concludes with a comparison between the first and fourth parts of the General estoria, showing a shift from theological exegesis toward a cultural exegesis of the world, where repetition becomes a principle of global reading and understanding.
