Ficciones económicas en el golfo de Guinea: Tres años en Fernando Póo (1871) de José Muñoz y Gaviria, Vizconde de San Javier

This essay analyzes the economic ideologies that shaped one of the first literary representations of the Spanish Territories of the Gulf of Guinea, Tres años en Fernando Póo (1871) by José Muñoz y Gaviria. The article explores the models of colonization depicted to argue that the author’s commitment to a plantation economy conditions the representation of the landscape and of the African communities that would be recruited as indentured workers. The Spanish literary production on this region is a corpus that has received limited attention but is of great value to highlight the role of literature in the creation of cultural imaginaries and economic fictions.
