Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word.
  • The document and file name do not contain any information that could identify the author (e.g., first and last name, email address, student number).
  • If previously submitted as an assignment for a course at the University of Ottawa, the submission obtained a grade of at least 80%. ​
  • Op-ed must be between 750 and 1,000 words, research papers between 2,500 and 4,000 words, and proposals between 2 and 3 pages.
  • The submission contains an abstract of 150-250 words and 3-10 pertinent key words.
  • The text is double-spaced, uses a 12-point font, contains clear and appropriate headings and subheadings.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the APA citation method.

Author Guidelines

Authors wishing to submit a manuscript must present their work in a Word file. The document and file name do not contain any information that could identify the author (e.g., first and last name, email address, student number).

The text should be written in Arial or Times New Roman font size 12, double-spaced, and structured with clear and appropriate headings and subheadings.

Furthermore, references must follow APA citation guidelines. Articles must also demonstrate academic quality equivalent to a minimum grade of 80%.

Each article must include an abstract between 150 and 250 words, as well as a list of three to ten relevant keywords.

The accepted formats are as follows:

  • Academic articles: between 2,500 and 4,000 words

  • Op-eds: between 750 and 1,000 words

  • Research proposals: 2 to 3 pages

Articles

Topics: International affairs, Politics, Policies and Political philosophy

Research Paper Requirements

  • Provides an in-depth analysis, evaluation, or interpretation of a single topic, based on empirical evidence.
  • Length: 2,500–4,000 words (excluding references and abstract).
  • Must follow the APA citation method.
  • Must include an abstract.
  • Subject to double-anonymous peer review.

Abstract Guidelines

  • A short summary of the research paper (150–250 words, about one paragraph).
  • Should include:
    • Key aspects of the literature review
    • Problem under investigation or research question(s)
    • Clearly stated thesis or hypothesis 
    • Methods used 
    • Implications (importance of the study and applications of the findings)

Additional requirements 

  • Research papers submitted as part of a course must have received a grade of at least 80%.
  • Articles may be submitted in either French or English.

Op-ed

Op-eds are short opinion pieces that usually focus on one argument. They should be supported by academic sources.

Topics : international affairs, Politics, Policies or Political philosophy. 

  • Length: between 750 - 1000 words, excluding references.
  • Peer reviewed through the same process as the longer articles. 
  • APA citation method. 
  • An abstract is not required 

 

Proposal

Topics: international affairs, politics, public policy, or political philosophy.

A proposal presents and justifies the need to study a research problem and outlines the practical ways in which the proposed study should be conducted. We will assess the relevance of the proposed research, as well as the quality and availability of sources.

  • Length: 2–3 pages

  • APA citation method

Proposals should include:

  • Introduction

  • Section explaining the relevance of the research

  • Methodology

  • Annotated bibliography

  •

The Undergraduate Journal of International Affairs, Politics, and Policy collects information required for managing submissions, peer reviews, and publications. This includes, but is not limited to, names, institutional affiliations, contact information (e.g., email addresses, phone numbers), and biographical details.
