Abstract

Nowadays, the notion of immersion is mostly linked to bilingual education, proposing devices that reinvent in someway the “natural” appropriation of a foreign or a second language in the framework of official language policies. However this natural immersion in languages has existed in Europe, and particularly in Switzerland, since theMiddle Ages, mainly in the border areas. What caused this "immersion device" to become one of the main tools to develop bilingual education? After reviewing the main conceptions and applications of immersion, we shall examine the existing immersion devices at the post-secondary level in Switzerland. Then, we will focus on the officially bilingual (French-German) University of Fribourg and analyze the offers in immersion, more specifically the Bilingue Plus programme. Finally we will explore the pre-requisites for bi/plurilingual education at a time when students might simply be satisfied with "English only".
