What is the IJHS?

Supported by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, the Interdisciplinary Journal of Health Sciences is devoted to showcasing and disseminating the original research of students. The IJHS values a truly interdisciplinary approach and for this reason has been organized in a manner that is consistent with the determinants of health.

The journal was founded in 2009, and enjoyed expansion the following year due to funding from the Mission Satisfaction program of the University of Ottawa. To date, it remains a non-profit, open-access endeavour (ISSN 1920-7433).

Our current publication schedule allows for 1-2 issues per academic year; however, submissions are accepted all year. All submissions of scholarly merit are welcome.

We cordially invite you to read our Strategic Report explaining everything there is to know about the IJHS: its missions, its mandates, its objectives, its organizational structure and its development projects.

Focus and Scope

Submission criteria are based on the twelve determinants of health as outlined by Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Ideally, anyone who wishes to submit their original work should clearly identify which determinant of health is associated with their paper and the nature of the relationship – how is the subject related to human health through the chosen determinant of health?

The Public Health Agency of Canada lists the following determinants of health:

  • Income and Social Status
  • Social Support Networks
  • Education and Literacy
  • Employment/Working Conditions
  • Social Environments
  • Physical Environments
  • Personal Health Practices and Coping Skills
  • Healthy Child Development
  • Biology and Genetic Endowment
  • Health Services
  • Gender
  • Culture

Open Access Policy

We pride ourselves in making the IJHS an open access endeavour in order to support the advancement of accessible knowledge in health sciences and global health.
