Drawing from the results of a 2010 survey conducted by a group of Linguistics students on undergraduate students’ perceptions and attitudes toward French as a Second Language in a bilingual university, a new program of French as a Second Language has been designed, integrating Language and targeted disciplinary content. The new program provides diversified learning opportunities leading to immediate use of the language in an academic setting. Its key elements include an introduction to Second Language learning in order to raise learners’ metalinguistic awareness, a university-oriented, discipline-sensitive and task-based curriculum, an assessment and evaluation tool based on performance specifiers linked to task achievement, as well as experiential opportunities to use French as a L2 in and out of class in a natural setting.
