When the Calculator Is Biased: Rethinking Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment in Indigenous Health

Cardiometabolic risk assessments are the pillars of our current daily clinical practices, yet they are assumed to be objective and universally applicable. This commentary argues many of the current tools used have not been extensively studied in marginalized populations, especially Indigenous peoples, reflecting colonial assumptions in their development. By reflecting on the ethical and clinical limitations of current models, this article calls for a more collaborative approach with Indigenous governance and culturally grounded approaches to assessing cardiometabolic risk to advance equity in preventative care.
