  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) launched Volume 34, Number 2 (2025) – a general issue edited by Justin Piché (University of Ottawa) and Kevin Walby (University of Winnipeg). In addition to articles on the impact of ‘tough on crime’ sentencing measures and prison education, this edition of the journal includes a “Dialogue on Argentinian Prisons” featuring contributions from Tumbergencia, book reviews, artwork by imprisoned artist Leo Cardez, and more.

  As part of the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) and the Division of Convict Criminology launched Volume 33, Number 1, which is a special issue edited by Grant Tietjen (University of Washington – Tacoma), Alison Cox (East Carolina University) and J. Renee Trombley (Metropolitan State University of Denver) marking the 25^th anniversary of Convict Criminology.

  Ahead of Prisoners' Justice Day (PJD) on August 10th, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) launched Volume 32, Number 2, which is a general issue edited by Kevin Walby (University of Winnipeg) and Justin Piché (University of Ottawa). Dedicated to the memory of former JPP Dialogue Editor Sarah Speight, the collection features contributions on various issues, including life sentences and barriers to obtaining parole, the perils of prison reform, institutional culture, facility crowding, education initiatives, as well as homophobia and transphobia behind bars. The cover art was created by Peter Collins.

• Volume 32(1) of the JPP is now available online

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) launched Volume 32, Number 1 - a special issue on “Walls to Bridges” (W2B) edited by Shoshana Pollack (Wilfrid Laurier University) and Christine Mayor (University of Manitoba). The collection features articles by alumni and professors marking the 10th anniversary of W2B, which offers for-credit courses through universities and colleges taught within correctional settings across Canada where an equal number of incarcerated (“inside”) students and university/college-based (“outside") students learn together as peers. The impact of the initiative behind and beyond prison walls, the role of collaborative learning and Indigenous ways of knowing, leadership by imprisoned people, and the experiences of anti-Black racism and colonization in and out of prison classrooms are just some of the themes addressed in this special issue. The collection also includes artwork by W2B alumni.

• Volume 31(2) of the JPP is now available online

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons launched Volume 31, Number 2 - a special issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) featuring two dialogue sections. The first, featuring pieces on "Prison Labour", is edited by Jordan House and Kelly Struthers Montford. The second, featuring pieces on "Gender, Health and (In)justice in Canada", is edited by Martha Paynter, OmiSoore Dryden and El Jones. The collection also features a preface commemorating the 35th anniversary of the JPP, a Response on the importance of mutual aid following imprisonment, as well as reviews of a film and two books. The cover art was created by Joker (front) and Peter Collins (back).

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons launched Volume 31, Number 1 - a special issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) on "Desistance, Social Justice and Lived Experience" edited by Katharina Maier, Rosemary Ricciardelli, and Shadd Maruna. The collection features contributions on the structures, laws, policies, practices, resources, and relationships that facilitate and/or act as barriers to desistance from criminalized acts. The cover art was created by Steel Door Studios.

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons launched Volume 30, Number 2 - a special issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) on an "Anti-Colonial Approach to Abolition" edited by Thalia Anthony, Vicki Chartrand and Tracey McIntosh. The collection features contributions on various themes, including how genocidal settler colonial state institutions, laws, policies and practices serve as pipelines to prisons, the systemic racism experienced by Indigenous peoples behind and beyond bars, the so-called indigenization of incarceration, and the additional barriers to community re-entry faced by Indigenous peoples. The cover art was created by Tim Felfoldi (front) and Cory Cardinal (back).

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons launched Volume 30, Number 1 - a general issue featuring contributions on various issues, including life sentences, use of force, solitary confinement, as well as barriers to community re-entry and the development of Convict Criminology. The Prisoners' Struggles section also explores the impact of COVID-19 on imprisoned people. The cover art was made by an anonymous imprisoned artist who founded Steel Door Studios.

• New issue of the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons features writings on the (mis)management of COVID-19 by Canadian prison authorities

  Today, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) launched Volume 29, Number 1 & 2 – a double-issue assembled during the course of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic that threatened the health and prematurely ended the lives of scores of people, including prisoners. The article section of this issue features peer-reviewed contributions on a host of problems that existed in prisons prior to the pandemic such as the challenges prisoners face when coping with being disconnected from partners, family and friends, being subject to austere conditions of confinement including in segregation units that go by other names, and miscarriages of justice. The Response and Prisoners’ Struggles sections of this issue include several contributions documenting the impact of measures instituted by Canadian carceral state entities to prevent and manage the spread of COVID-19 behind prison walls. Some of the prisoner solidarity and mutual aid initiatives that have supported current and former prisoners in Canada profiled in this issue also provide a snapshot of the horrific treatment endured by criminalized people during the pandemic.

  As people behind and beyond bars prepare to mark Prisoners’ Justice Day (PJD) for the forty-sixth time on Monday, August 10^th the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) launched Volume 28, Number 2 online. This special issue, titled “Prison (In)justice in Canada at the Crossroads”, features dozens of contributions written by federal prisoners on the many barriers and challenges they face in trying to better their lives and work towards their release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC) institutions.

Content currently available for download includes the introduction to the issue, individual articles from a section dedicated to "Continuing the Dialogue on Canada's Federal Penitentiary System" edited by Jarrod Shook, as well as Prisoners' Struggles pieces and a book review.
