This article questions the shaping of otherness in the French nationstate context. According to a historical approach and using legislative texts related to residence permit and naturalization, it underlines the variability of the “figure of the foreigner” and the role given to French language in its definition. It also leads to denaturalize the relation between “language” and “integration”, by considering them both as state categories of thought, participating in the gatekeeping of the national community and in producing the foreigner.
