Abstract

CLIC en ligne is a free French as a second language course for adult immigrants. The course, funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, was developed by the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks. From the ALAO’s perspective, the challenge was to reach a diverse population with a range of skills and priorities (e.g., weak language skills, varied computer skills, family emergencies and/or work priorities). This paper will provide the context for the development of the course, present the challenges related to official language education in Canada, and discuss responses to these challenges. The responses take into account earlier work on language competence and French as a second language for adults as well as the current state of mechanisms of linguistic integration of immigrants.
